CFA Level 2 vs Level 3: Format, Skills, and Prep Shift

Level 2 is built around item-set vignettes (case + multiple MCQs). Level 3 keeps vignettes but adds constructed-response sets with command words inside the same timed session. Candidates who only train L2-style MCQs underperform on essay grading.

Level 3 also introduces a large specialized pathway weight. Your prep calendar must include pathway cases, not only “core PM” leftovers from Level 2.

How practice should change

After you pass Level 2, shift weekly reps toward mixed sessions: item-set pacing plus typed answers. Keep Ethics warm. Use Level 2 mocks only if vignette reading speed is still weak; otherwise move to Level 3 mocks.
