CFA Level 3 Constructed Response Guide (Command Words)

Essays are graded on the command word

Constructed-response sets on CFA® Level 3 use bold command words (Calculate, Determine, Justify, Recommend, Contrast, and similar). Graders award points for answering the exact ask — not for dumping every related fact you remember.

Before you type, underline the command word and the subject. A perfect portfolio theory paragraph that never “justifies” the recommendation scores poorly.

Timing inside a mixed session

Institute sessions mix item sets and essay sets in the same 132 minutes. Do not “save all essays for the end.” Treat each 12-point essay set like a timed case: rough target ~12 minutes, then move on.

If an essay stalls, write the direct answer line and one justification bullet, flag it, and return after the next item set.

How to practice here

Our Level 3 mocks interleave MCQ item sets with constructed-response sets so you practice switching modes under a timer. MCQs auto-score; essays show a model answer plus scoring notes on review so you can self-mark Full / Partial / Miss.

Pair this guide with the Level 3 exam format overview and a topic-weight plan.
