CFA Level I exam in the United States
A candidate working in New York finance, a West Coast role or another US location needs a study routine that fits local hours. Client deadlines and cross-country meetings can crowd out the same evening, so reserve focused work before filling the calendar with optional study calls.

CFA Level I exam fees: Build a USD budget beyond registration
CFA Institute lists fees in USD, but registration is only one part of a personal budget. Consider preparation materials, transportation and any lodging separately. Check current fees for your selected window instead of relying on an amount copied from a previous exam year.
CFA Institute publishes exam fees in USD. Select Level I and your exam window on its fee page; check CFA Institute for current fees. Use the selector to confirm the amount applicable to your chosen window. Source checked on 27 October 2026.

The CFA exam is computer-based at Prometric test centers. Register with CFA Institute, then schedule your appointment through its scheduling process. Check CFA Institute and the linked Prometric service for local centers, scheduling windows and available appointments. Registration and appointment scheduling are separate steps; do not assume a particular location or seat is available.

Plan around cross-country meetings and peak work
- Reserve four weekday sessions of forty-five minutes for new concepts and closed-book recall. Place the most demanding reading before your day’s first recurring meeting whenever possible.
- Add a three-hour weekend problem block and two hours to review errors and retry older misses. That makes an eight-hour example week; expand it according to the syllabus you still need to cover.
- When a deadline week interrupts the plan, keep brief retrieval practice and reschedule new reading explicitly. For a study partner in another time zone, exchange written explanations rather than sacrificing the same workday slot.
Use a realistic Mock Exam to guide revision
A realistic Mock Exam can reveal a pace that feels comfortable early but leaves insufficient review time. Classify errors as concept gaps, calculation slips or reading mistakes before deciding what to practice next.
Use a timed Mock Exam to practice pacing, flagging difficult questions and returning to them within the clock. Compare your topic coverage with the current CFA Institute Level I topic weights. Afterwards, record why each mistake happened, revisit the underlying concept and retry it after a gap. A practice score helps direct revision; it does not predict an exam result. How do I coordinate a study group across US time zones?
Name the meeting time zone and check each member’s local calendar. Use shared written explanations for routine review so live calls are reserved for concepts that need discussion.
Should I study before work during a busy reporting season?
If mornings are dependable, use them for difficult reading and keep evening work short. When the workload peaks, preserve recall and review, then update the plan to reflect the reading you deferred.
Does a USD fee quote cover my whole exam budget?
No. Check the current registration fee and applicable terms with CFA Institute, then separately budget preparation, transportation, lodging and any other costs relevant to your situation.
Can I take the exam remotely from home in the US?
Plan for a computer-based appointment at a test center through the CFA Institute scheduling process. This guide does not promise a remote option; verify any current delivery policies directly with the Institute.
How should I use work experience when reviewing mistakes?
Connect the concept to a familiar task, then return to the curriculum’s exact assumptions and definitions. A workplace shortcut may be inappropriate for the question being asked.
