How to use a CFA practice exam for Level 1

A practice exam is a full, timed set of questions taken under exam-like conditions. Used well, it shows how you handle pacing and which topics need more work. This guide covers when to start, how to sit a practice exam, how to review it, and how CFA Mock Exam fits alongside official CFA Institute practice.

Practice exam, Mock Exam or question bank?

In CFA preparation, a practice exam and a Mock Exam usually mean the same thing: a timed, mixed-topic sitting that rehearses the real exam. A question bank is different. It is for targeted practice on one topic at a time, and it works best between full sittings.

Registered candidates get official practice questions and mock exams from CFA Institute in its Learning Ecosystem. Independent Mock Exams, such as ours, add more timed practice; our questions are original study material, not official CFA Institute exam items.

When to start taking practice exams

A first practice exam early in your preparation can show you the format and give you a baseline. Treat that score as a starting point, not a verdict.

The most useful practice exams come once you have studied most of the curriculum, when a timed sitting can expose gaps across every topic. Leave enough time between sittings to review your mistakes and revisit weak areas; a practice exam you never review teaches very little.

How to sit a practice exam

  1. Block out uninterrupted time and sit the whole session in one go, as you would on exam day.
  2. Use only the tools you will have in the test centre, including an approved calculator.
  3. Check your pace at a few points in the session rather than after every question.
  4. Flag questions you are unsure about, move on, and come back to them before time runs out.
  5. Answer every question: there is no penalty for a wrong answer.

Review every sitting with an error log

The review is where most of the learning happens. Go through every question you missed or guessed, not just the ones you got wrong.

How many practice exams should you take?

There is no fixed number. Aim for enough timed sittings to be comfortable with the pacing and to see a stable pattern in your topic results, spaced out so you have time to review each one. New questions are a better readiness check than repeating a Mock Exam you remember.

Frequently asked questions

Are CFA practice exams and mock exams the same thing?

Usually, yes. Both describe a timed, mixed-topic sitting under exam-like conditions. A question bank is different: it is for targeted practice on one topic.

Are these official CFA mock tests?

No. CFA Mock Exam is independent practice software and is not affiliated with CFA Institute. Registered candidates also receive official practice questions and mock exams from CFA Institute.

When should I take my first CFA practice exam?

Take one early if you want a baseline, but expect the most useful results once you have studied most of the curriculum. Leave time after each sitting to review your mistakes.

How should I review a practice exam?

Log every miss with its topic, why it happened and the rule you should have used, then retry those questions after a gap. Look for patterns across sittings before changing your study plan.

Is there a free CFA Level 1 practice exam?

Yes. Mock Exam 1 on CFA Mock Exam is free with an account and includes an instant score. Paid access unlocks all 8 Mock Exams, explanations and post-mock analysis.

Does a practice exam score predict my result?

No. A practice score helps you decide what to revise next; it does not predict a CFA exam result.
